Mark Bailey is the new Keith Hill Sunday Pool Singles Champion for the fifth time in his career.
He saw off the challenge of John Grobnik coming back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 in a pulsating final
watched by a sizeable crowd at the Crooked Cue. Grobnik earlier on in the match looked in complete
control as he cleared up after Bailey made some uncharacteristic misses. Just as it looked as
though Grobnik had won it Bailey got a chance to clear but he left himself a tricky black that he
managed to double to make it 3-1. Grobnik however still looked in control but a missed opportunity on
the black let Bailey in and so the score was 3-2. Same story in the 6th frame as Grobnik failed
again to take his chance. Bailey levelled and so it went to the decider when both players waited
for their opportunity and then Bailey got his chance and took it to the delight of his own
supporters. A truly great final, but such a shame that there has to be a runner up. Shortly
afterwards Mark Bailey announced that he would donate his winnings of £100 to a local school
to go towards a new computer.
In the earlier rounds there were some good performances as Kev Connor won a close fought match 2-1
against Paul Shepherd and Dave Barlow beat Andy Palin also 2-1. John Daniels had a tough encounter
against Daz Waters but came out a 2-1 victor. Mark Bailey started with a 2-1 win over stalwart
Steve Finney while John Grobnik started his run with a closely fought 2-1 win over Dave Whitfield.
Gavin Davies and Dave Ashton both won 2-0 against Duncan Sunderland and Giles Eastwood respectively.
In the quarters, 3 matches ended in 2-0 victories for Bailey, Daniels and Grobnik. The closest match
was between Davies and Dave Barker and after some excellent exchanges of pool it was Barker who
claimed a 2-1 success to reach his second semi appearance. Daniels also made his second semi
appearance but unfortunately came up against an in-form Grobnik who stormed to a 3-0 win and so
reached the Final. In the other semi, Barker and Bailey fought out an even contest with some
excellent potting on show, but it was Bailey who sunk the deciding black for a 3-1 victory to reach
the final.

The Doubles Finals night was held at the Crooked Cue and it proved to be a night of shocks and
entertaining pool play. Lee Whitehouse and Gavin Davies are the new Doubles Champions
of Keith Hill Stafford Sunday Pool League.
The Bird in Hand X pairing beat the experienced pair of Spencer Trow (Crooked Cue X) and Will Edge
(British Legion) in a pulsating final. The latter pulled off a big shock in the Semis, inflicting a
first defeat in almost 4 years on 3 times winners Tim McGann and Kev Brown. Whitehouse and Davies
also beat an experienced pairing of Andy Bent and Andy Rawlinson in a close encounter 2-1.
The Final saw Whitehouse go for the clearance off the break in the first frame but fell short and
this enabled Trow and Edge to claw themselves back in the game with some tactical play. Trow then took
his chance to make it 1-0. In the second frame, things got very tactical and Whitehouse / Davies knew
it was important not to fall further behind. After some tactical exchanges it was left to Whitehouse,
who saw his chance and cleared up to make it 1-1.
The momentum was back in Davies / Whitehouse favour and it gave them the licence to play attacking
pool and again they had another chance and they duly took it to make it 2-1. Trow / Edge had to stop
them and after waiting for their chance they nearly clawed it back but let Davies in. He was under
pressure with some difficult shots to play but with the winning post only a few shots away he took it
and left himself a black into the middle. He stroked it in and with delight and raising the cue in the
air Dennis Taylor style, it was confirmed that himself Gavin Davies and Lee
Whitehouse were doubles champions for the first time.

HOP POLE | 3 - 1 | THREE TUNS |
League Champions the Hop Pole achieved the double after a 3-1 success over second division Three Tuns. The match was being played at the Crooked Cue and a good size crowd saw an entertaining match.
First on was Kev Brown (Hop Pole) who was up against captain Ian Thomas (3 Tuns). It was Thomas who put the pressure on as he went for his pots. However Brown played a snooker and Thomas wasn’t successful in his escape attempt. He let Brown in and he looked likely to clear but fell short with his position and then both players started to get tight on their shots but it was the cool head of Thomas who took his chance and gave the 3 Tuns an unexpected 1-0 lead.
The second game saw Andy Rawlinson (Hop Pole) pitted against Mark Davis (3 Tuns). It was Rawlinson who had the better start as he did his best to retrieve the situation. Davis tried his utmost to gain the initiative but Rawlinson was in control and he cleared the table with minimum fuss and so levelled the scores 1-1.
In the third game Mick Addison (Hop Pole) was drawn against Paul Johnson (3 Tuns). This match proved to be a tight tussle as both players looked nervous, Addison played a couple of loose shots and let Johnson in but after bringing out the awkward balls, he then snookered himself and let Addison in. Amazingly Addison missed his pot and went in-off and so gave Johnson a great chance, but he again fell short and so it was left to Addison who for the third time of asking, cleared up his remaining balls and made it 2-1.
In the fourth match Mark Bailey (Hop Pole) was drawn against Dennis Kitchen (3 Tuns). This game was similar to the previous one as both players struggled to find any sort of rhythm. Kitchen was given an opportunity to level the match after Bailey went in-off. After negotiating the first few balls he was in ideal position to finish it but surprisingly missed a relatively straightforward pot. This put Bailey in and he again fell short on the black and so Kitchen had another chance. But unfortunately he again failed to capitalise and let Bailey back in with another chance but he over-cut his shot. Luckily, he left Kitchen a difficult cut into the corner. He missed, and this time Bailey made sure to finish with a 3-1 scoreline and Hop Pole became the Stan Bent Team Knockout Winners.

Holders the Bird progressed, beating the New Vic 3-1, as did last years runners up the Crooked Cue K who saw off the Rickerscote B winning 3-0. The Rickerscote beat the Bushes A 3-0 to book their place in the next round - Shaun Draper, Dave Ashton and Lee Terry all won. The Island lost out in a close match 3-2 to the Joiners - Steve Duchan, Andy Pearley and John garside all won. There was an identical score at the Bushes B as they overcame a rugged Shrewsbury Arms running out 3-2 winners. The Hop Pole faced a tough trip to the Fox and Hounds but came through 3-1 victors.
